The Antioch Sports
Complex: Phase I
The
Antioch Missionary Baptist Church began a capital campaign
in 2003 to raise funds for the Antioch Sports Complex. We
broke ground on October 26, 2003, under the leadership of
Pastor E. Thurman Walker and the watchful eye of the Antioch
Community Transformation Network (ACTN). This beautiful
22,645 square foot facility was dedicated in April 2005.
Current and former city officials, representatives of the
San Antonio Silver Stars of the WNBA and the Spurs
organization, the Chairperson of ACTN, the Supervisor of
Buildings and Maintenance for Antioch, and the entire
Antioch family were present to watch Pastor Walker cut the
ribbon to mark the official opening of the Antioch Sports
Complex.
This state-of-the-art
sports and fitness center has a beautiful basketball court,
dance room, walking path, modern exercise equipment for
weight training and aerobics, sauna, and dedicated space for
the lockers, offices, and training facilities of the San
Antonio Silver Stars. There is also a room dedicated to the
legacy of one of the hardest working men that ever lived,
who dedicated his life to maintaining the buildings and
grounds of Antioch, Deacon Oscar Ray Williams. We
affectionately call this dedicated space, the Daddy Ray
Room.
Through a public use agreement, we have
partnered with the City of San Antonio to make the
facilities of the Sports Complex available to the members of
our community free of charge at specified times. For
extended use of the facilities of this great fitness center,
memberships can be purchased at a cost that is more
economical than any equivalent fitness center in the city.
The Antioch Sports
Complex has served the community well in just a few short
years. It has served as the practice facility of the San
Antonio Silver Stars, the location of programs for Seniors
such as the Silver Sneakers Program and the Annual African
American Seniors Conference, a center for AAU and high
school sporting events, a practice facility for visiting NBA
teams, and a site of Community Forums. It is also a
versatile facility, having been used for wedding receptions,
banquets, concerts, and dances. Some of the most memorable
events that have been held in the Sports Complex since its
dedication include a Neighborhood Inauguration Ball in
January 2009, the Fiftieth Birthday Celebration for Pastor
Walker in August 2009, and the Installation Reception for
Pastor Kemp in February 2010. |
